Veterinary Autoclave: Choosing Sterilisers for Vet Clinics

Vet surgery packs, drapes and dental instruments place the same demands on a steriliser as human surgery. Here is how to choose the class and size.

What vet clinics sterilise

Surgical instrument packs

Spay, neuter and soft-tissue kits are usually wrapped and stored, so they need a cycle proven for wrapped loads.

Drapes, gowns and swabs

Textiles are porous loads. Air trapped inside them blocks steam, so they need vacuum air removal and good drying.

Dental instruments

Veterinary dental handpieces and scaler tips are hollow, like their human equivalents, and need a Class B cycle.

Large or heavy sets

Orthopaedic sets may not fit a small chamber. Check chamber depth, tray size and the maker’s maximum load.

Monitoring and records

  • Run a Bowie-Dick or helix test at the start of each day on vacuum units.
  • Place an integrator inside each wrapped surgical pack.
  • Run a Geobacillus stearothermophilus spore test, commonly weekly and after repairs.
  • Label every pack with the date and cycle number so a failed load can be recalled.
  • Keep cycle printouts and test results together.

Documents to ask for

Many sterilisers sold to vet clinics are the same tabletop models sold to human clinics. Ask for the EN 13060 class and declaration of conformity, and whether the model is registered with the MDA — these documents tell you what the machine has been tested to do. Tell us your caseload and pack sizes and we can quote suitable units.

Frequently asked questions

Do vet clinics need a different autoclave from human clinics?
Not usually. The same tabletop classes and sizes are used; what matters is the load, and wrapped packs, textiles and hollow instruments need Class B.
Can drapes and gowns go in a tabletop autoclave?
Yes, in a Class B unit proven for porous loads, packed loosely so steam can penetrate. Stay within the maker’s maximum textile load.
What size autoclave suits a small vet clinic?
Many single-surgeon clinics choose 18 to 23 litres. Size by the largest surgical pack you need to fit and the number of packs on your busiest day.
