Is Your Autoclave MDA-Registered? How to Check in Five Minutes
A steriliser sold for medical instruments must be registered with the Medical Device Authority, and the companies bringing it in must be licensed. Here is how to check both on the public register — and what changed at MDA in 2026.
Why registration matters for a steriliser
Under the Medical Device Act 2012 (Act 737), a medical device must be registered with the Medical Device Authority (MDA) before it is imported, exported or placed on the Malaysian market. The Act’s definition of a medical device includes products intended for disinfecting medical devices, so a steriliser sold for reprocessing patient instruments is inside it. Three things should line up before you pay.
The model is registered
Each registered device has a registration number issued by MDA after conformity assessment. Registration lasts five years and has to be renewed, so a number printed in an old brochure may since have lapsed.
The companies are licensed
Manufacturers, importers, distributors and local authorised representatives of medical devices need an MDA establishment licence. Whoever sells to you should be able to name the licensed establishment the unit comes through.
Your use matches the registration
Registration follows the intended use the manufacturer declared. A laboratory autoclave sold only for media, glassware and waste is generally not placed on the market as a medical device, so it should not be bought to sterilise patient instruments.
Lab autoclaves and their regulationHow to check on the Malaysia Medical Device Register
MDA’s public search is the Malaysia Medical Device Register (MMDR), linked from the MDA website at mmdr.mda.gov.my. It is free, needs no login and draws its data from MeDC@St 2.0, MDA’s online application system. It covers registered devices, licensed establishments and conformity assessment bodies.
1. Get the number in writing
Ask the supplier for the MDA registration number of the exact model quoted, and the name of the establishment that holds the registration. Put both on the quotation.
2. Search the device
Choose Registered Medical Device and search by registration number. You can also search by brand name or establishment name to see what else that company has registered. The search box cannot be left blank.
3. Match the record to the quote
Compare the device name, manufacturer and registration holder on the record with the quotation and the documents that come with the machine. If they do not match, ask why before you sign.
4. Check the seller’s licence
Choose Licensed Establishments and search the company name or licence number of the importer or distributor.
5. Keep the evidence
Save a dated screenshot of both results in your purchase file. Auditors and licensing officers can ask how you confirmed the device was registered.

What if it is not on the register?
The register itself says that a device which does not appear may be unregistered, or its registration may have expired, been suspended or been cancelled. None of these is a status you want for a steriliser your patients depend on.
- Ask the supplier for the registration certificate and check the number on it against the register.
- Check the spelling of the brand and try the establishment name — a search that finds nothing is not always proof of absence.
- Do not accept a product classification letter in place of a registration. A classification letter records MDA’s decision on whether a product is a medical device; it is not a registration certificate.
- If you are still unsure, ask MDA directly before you buy rather than after delivery.
Which risk class is an autoclave?
Malaysia classes general medical devices from A (lowest risk) to D (highest), using rules aligned with the ASEAN Medical Device Directive. Rule 15 of those rules covers equipment used on other medical devices. The class on a model’s own registration record is the one that counts, because classification follows the manufacturer’s intended use.
| Device | Usual class under rule 15 | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Steam steriliser for medical instruments | Class C | Registered only after conformity assessment, so expect a registration number rather than a brochure claim |
| Washer-disinfector that disinfects before final sterilisation | Class B | Also a registered medical device when sold for instruments |
| Lab autoclave sold only for media, glassware or waste | Usually not a medical device | Fine for the lab, not for patient instruments |

What changed at MDA in 2026
A hologram security label is coming
In August 2026 MDA announced a hologram security label for registered medical devices, so that users can see at a glance that a device is registered. The Ministry of Health has used a hologram label against counterfeit medicines since 2005. As of mid-October 2026, MDA had not published which device categories it will cover, what it will look like or when it becomes compulsory, and industry reports from early October do not expect it before 2027. Until then, the register search is the check that counts.
Classification letters now expire
On 30 September 2026 MDA announced a validity period for product classification letters, reported as five years for letters issued from 1 October 2026. This mostly affects suppliers, but it is another reason not to treat a classification letter as proof of registration.
Faster renewals for some registrations
Since 13 July 2026, eligible re-registration applications can use an automated route. For buyers the point is simple: registration status changes over time, so check it when you buy, not from an old quotation.
Second-hand, refurbished and imported units
- A used autoclave is still a medical device. Check the model on the register and keep the seller’s documents.
- MDA publishes Good Refurbishment Practice guidance and a separate route for registering refurbished devices, so a unit sold commercially as refurbished should come with its own paperwork.
- A unit bought abroad and brought in privately may never have been registered for Malaysia, and local engineers may not hold its parts.
- Registration says nothing about after-sales support. Ask who services the model in your state and where its door seals, filters and valves are held.
