What each consumable proves

ISO 11140-1 sorts chemical indicators into six types. The higher the type, the more of the cycle it responds to.

ItemISO 11140-1 typeWhat it showsWhat it does not show
Autoclave tapeType 1 (process)The item was exposed to a cycleThat the contents are sterile
Printed pouch indicatorType 1 (process)The pouch went through a cycleThat steam reached the instrument
Bowie-Dick test sheet or packType 2 (specific test)Air removal and steam penetration in a vacuum unitAnything about patient loads
Multi-variable indicatorType 4Two or more critical variables were reachedFull cycle performance
Integrator stripType 5All critical variables, set against biological performanceIt does not replace spore tests
Emulating indicatorType 6The parameters of a specific stated cycle were metPerformance of other cycles

Choosing sterilisation pouches

Self-seal or heat-seal

Self-seal pouches have an adhesive strip and need no equipment. Heat-seal pouches or reels need a sealer but let you cut any length.

Made for steam

Use pouches specified for steam sterilisation, ideally with a printed steam indicator.

Right size

The instrument should fit with space around it and without stretching the seal. Sharp tips can pierce the pouch — use tip protectors where needed.

Packing, labelling and storage

  • Clean and dry instruments before pouching; open hinged instruments.
  • Do not overfill — steam must reach every surface.
  • Write the date, cycle number and contents outside the sealed area.
  • Let pouches dry fully in the autoclave; reprocess any that come out wet or torn.
  • Store in closed, clean, dry cupboards off the floor and away from sinks.

Frequently asked questions

Can I fold a pouch and close it with autoclave tape?
Use the pouch’s own self-seal strip or a heat sealer. Folding and taping a pouch does not give a reliable sterile barrier.
Do I still need integrators if my pouches have indicators?
Yes. Pouch indicators only show the pouch was processed; an integrator inside the pack shows time, temperature and steam reached the instruments.
Can sterilisation pouches be reused?
No. Pouches are single-use; once opened or reprocessed the seal and paper can no longer be relied on.
