Dental Autoclave for Malaysian Dental Clinics

Why dental clinics need a Class B autoclave, how to size it by chairs and patients, and the daily routine that keeps handpieces safe.

Last updated:

Why dental means Class B

Dental handpieces, air-water syringe tips and ultrasonic scaler tips have narrow internal channels. Only a vacuum (Class B) cycle is proven to get steam inside them, and most dental instruments are stored pouched.

Sizing by chairs

ClinicSuggested chamberNotes
1 chair17–18 LOne unit can keep up with a normal list
2–3 chairs22–23 LConsider a second unit as backup
4+ chairs2 × 23 LTwo machines avoid downtime during service

Handpiece reprocessing

  • Clean and lubricate per the handpiece maker before sterilising.
  • Pouch and label each handpiece with the date and cycle number.
  • Run on a Class B wrapped cycle and let it dry fully in the machine.
  • Keep a daily Bowie-Dick or helix test record and a weekly spore test record.

Brands you will see quoted in Malaysia

Frequently asked questions

Can a dental clinic use a Class N autoclave?
Not for handpieces or pouched instruments. A Class N unit is only proven for unwrapped solid instruments.
How many autoclaves does a dental clinic need?
One is enough for a single chair; clinics with several chairs often keep two so treatment continues while one is serviced.
How often should a dental autoclave be serviced?
Follow the manufacturer, but most recommend an annual service with seal, filter and calibration checks, plus routine cleaning by staff.
