Second Hand Autoclave: Checks Before You Buy a Used Unit

A used autoclave can save money or cost you a failed audit. These are the checks that tell the difference.

Risks with a used autoclave

Unknown history

Without service records you cannot tell whether it ran on tap water, skipped seal changes or failed tests.

Parts and support

Older or discontinued models may have no local parts or engineer, which turns a small fault into a dead machine.

Calibration drift

Temperature and pressure sensors drift over time. An uncalibrated unit can display correct figures while the load is under-processed.

Paperwork

You still need the EN 13060 class, the manual and the model’s MDA registration for a steriliser used on medical instruments.

Inspection checklist

  • Model, serial number and year of manufacture.
  • Full service history and the date of the last calibration.
  • A vacuum leak test and a Bowie-Dick or helix test run in front of you (vacuum units).
  • Door seal condition, and the chamber checked for scale, pitting or discolouration.
  • Printer or data logging working, with a readable cycle record.
  • Confirmation that seals, filters and valves for this model are still available locally.

Registration and after the purchase

Ask whether the model is listed on the MDA register and keep all paperwork. Whatever its age, have the unit professionally serviced and calibrated, then pass leak, air-removal and spore tests before patient use. If a used unit does not check out, tell us your load and we can quote suitable new units for comparison.

Frequently asked questions

Is a second hand autoclave safe to use?
It can be, if it passes leak, air-removal and spore tests after a professional service and calibration. Without service records and test results, treat it as unproven.
What should I ask someone selling a used autoclave?
Ask for the model and serial number, age, service and calibration history, why it is being sold and whether parts are still available. Ask to see a test cycle run.
Do you sell used autoclaves?
We do not list used units. Tell us your load and we can quote suitable new units so you can compare them against a used offer.
