UV Sterilizer Cabinet vs Autoclave: What Each Can Do

UV cabinets are sold as “sterilizers”, but they do not sterilise instruments. Here is how they differ from an autoclave and what to use instead.

How each works

UV cabinet

Ultraviolet light acts only on surfaces it shines on directly. It does not pass through soil, pouches or metal, and it misses shadows, hinges and lumens.

Autoclave

Saturated steam under pressure reaches every surface once air is removed, and holds it at temperature — at least 3 minutes at 134 °C or 15 minutes at 121 °C.

Where a UV cabinet fits

  • It does not replace cleaning: UV does not remove soil, and soil shields microorganisms.
  • It does not replace sterilisation for anything that breaks skin or enters sterile tissue.
  • At most it is an extra surface-disinfection or storage step for non-critical items, used per the maker’s instructions.
  • If a supplier calls a UV box an instrument “steriliser”, ask for evidence it is registered and validated for that purpose.

Moving from UV to an autoclave

Clean instruments first, then steam-sterilise them. Choose Class B if you store tools in pouches or use hollow instruments; Class N is only proven for unwrapped solid instruments used straight away. Tell us what you reprocess and we can quote suitable units after hearing your needs.

Frequently asked questions

Why can’t UV light sterilise instruments?
UV only acts on surfaces it shines on directly. Hinges, serrations, lumens, shadowed areas and anything inside a pouch or under residue receive little or no dose.
Can a UV cabinet dry pouches that come out of the autoclave wet?
No. Pouches must leave the autoclave dry from its own drying phase; wet packs are not considered sterile and should be reprocessed.
What should replace a UV box in a clinic or studio?
Cleaning followed by a steam autoclave — Class B if instruments are pouched or hollow — or single-use sterile instruments.
