Autoclave Maintenance: Daily, Weekly and Annual Checklist
Most autoclave failures start with water, seals or skipped tests. This checklist keeps a clinic or lab steriliser passing — and lasting.

Maintenance schedule
| When | Task | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Daily | Wipe the door seal and chamber; check the water reservoir level and quality | Debris on the seal causes leaks; poor water causes scale and wet packs |
| Daily | Run the Bowie-Dick or helix test (vacuum units) | Proves air removal works before patient loads |
| Weekly | Clean trays and the chamber with the maker’s cleaner; drain and rinse the reservoir | Removes residue and mineral build-up |
| Weekly | Biological (spore) test | Definitive proof that the cycle kills spores |
| Monthly | Check and clean filters (bacteria filter, water filter, dust filter) | Blocked filters slow drying and vacuum |
| Yearly | Professional service: calibration, valves, seal replacement, safety checks | Keeps temperature and pressure readings accurate |
Water: the most common cause of trouble
- Use distilled or deionised water of the quality the manufacturer specifies.
- Never top up with tap or mineral water — calcium and chlorides scale valves and stain instruments.
- Empty and rinse the reservoir regularly so it never grows algae or biofilm.
- If your unit has a water-quality sensor, never bypass its warning.
Common faults and what they usually mean
| Symptom | Likely cause |
|---|---|
| Wet packs at the end of the cycle | Overloading, poor water, blocked filter, failing vacuum pump |
| Vacuum or leak test fails | Dirty or worn door seal, valve fault |
| Bowie-Dick shows uneven colour change | Air leak or poor air removal — stop using the machine |
| Stained or spotted instruments | Water quality, detergent residue, mixed metals |
| Cycle aborts on temperature or pressure | Sensor drift, heating element or valve fault — needs a technician |
Keeping records
Keep cycle printouts or logs, daily test results, spore test results and service reports together. They are the first thing an infection-control audit or licensing inspection will ask for.

Frequently asked questions
How often should an autoclave be serviced?
Most manufacturers specify a professional service at least once a year, plus daily and weekly user maintenance.
How often should the door seal be replaced?
Follow the manufacturer’s interval — often yearly or after a set number of cycles — and sooner if the leak test fails or the seal is cracked.
Why are my autoclave packs wet?
Usually overloading, poor-quality water, a blocked filter or a weak vacuum pump. Wet packs should be reprocessed, not used.
