Autoclave Machine: Types, Sizes and How to Choose

A plain guide to the parts, cycles and sizes of a clinic or laboratory autoclave machine, written for buyers in Malaysia.

How an autoclave machine works

Air removal

Air blocks steam. Class B machines pump it out in several vacuum pulses; simpler machines push it out with steam (gravity or passive air removal).

Heat-up and hold

Saturated steam fills the chamber until the load reaches the set temperature, then holds it there — at least 3 minutes at 134 °C or 15 minutes at 121 °C.

Exhaust and drying

Pressure is released and a vacuum or heated chamber dries the load. Packs must leave the machine dry.

Sizing the chamber

  • 8–12 L: very low volume — a single treatment room, beauty or tattoo studio.
  • 17–18 L: the common choice for a GP or single-chair dental clinic.
  • 22–23 L: multi-chair dental, busy GP or small day-surgery.
  • 35 L and above: laboratory media and waste, or a central reprocessing room.

Features worth paying for

  • Built-in printer or USB/data logging for cycle records.
  • Automatic Bowie-Dick, helix and vacuum-test programmes.
  • A prion cycle (134 °C for 18 minutes) if your policy calls for one.
  • Water quality sensor that stops a cycle on poor feed water.
  • Local spare parts and a named service engineer.

Frequently asked questions

What litre autoclave is most common in Malaysian clinics?
The 17 to 23 litre tabletop autoclave is the most common size for GP and dental clinics.
Can an autoclave machine sterilise liquids?
Only machines with a validated liquids programme should be used for liquids. Many clinic tabletop units are not designed for it; laboratory vertical autoclaves usually are.
What does an autoclave machine need to be installed?
A stable bench or floor space with ventilation clearance, a suitable power socket, a supply of distilled or deionised water and, for some models, a drain.
